As with all thing on the Offence, it all starts at the O-line. In two successive seasons, the O-line was, frankly, horrible to start the year. 2021 saw us move Ciraco from G to C, and that was a disaster. As much as I like and appreciate CVZ, he's spent more time off the field than on it. It wasn't until the final third of the season that it rounded into form and botht the running AND passing games improved. This is a personnel issue that falls on ONE man - El Presidente Orlondo. rockfish - do you give Washington good marks for his Defence? Seems to me they could never get a stop in the second half of games, always gave up a 7-12 yard cushion that all other teams were able to exploit, and the almost ZERO pressure on opposing QBs due to injuries (no capable backup for Wynn) and broken, aging players at the other DT spot. I won't say anything about letting BOTH our DEs walk in FA - Davis was invisible, so that was no great loss, except there was no capable replacement; and Mauldin turned into a beast with, again, no capable replacement. Add in a bunch of small DBs who lose virtually EVERY 50/50 ball, get outmuscled by bigger receivers, and are FAR from the ball-hawks we expected them to be. Then there's kicking. Again, under Orlondo, the kicking game has been horrid for two seasons. DomaCRAPa is NOT a professional-level punter or kicker. He has been out-performed in each role by rookie American or International players. Also, Craig Butler seemed to do SFA this year since Reinebold gave Orlondo the finger amd moved back home to coach in Hawai'i. Maybe ha wasn't offered the "Assistant Head Coach" title like Condell and Washington, maybe it was the personnel decisions (and the three blind mice in the GM office), maybe it was a disagreement with how the 2020 GC ended (how nice it is to be able to talk about that on here, unlike The Prowl). The result is that STs wanked this season. It's New Year's Eve, and the team has yet to announce ANY "impactful" signings of their own Free Agents - especially the one they traded two draft picks for JUST TO HAVE THE BARGAINING RIGHTS and use this season's unused Cap money (if any) as signing bonuses. Don't get me wrong, I haven't seen very many signings in the media from the other teams either. It almost makes me think that it MIGHT be a League directive.

Ottawa certainly saw something in him. What has Condell accomplished? I'm certainly not the only one of this opinion. Tommy refuses to stick with a running game/back. Instead he tries to hand the ball off to receivers. Running Backs need to get into a rhythm. imo, that's the main reason why we lost the playoff game to Montreal. Also why we get sacked so often...the D Line can just pin their ears back and not worry about the run. Cats ran the ball in 2019, didnt run in the first half of 2021 because we didnt have the talent for it. As the Oline was improved and Hills was brought on board, we ran the ball. Condell has certainly accomplished more than Khari Jones. If Bob Dyce/Khari Jones are a better team than we are next year, sweeping changes will be needed top to bottom. We did run the ball consistently once Wes Hills had success. Why did we abandon it in the playoffs?

Defence was inconsistent to say the least. Who would have guessed that Mauldin would have turned out to be the league leader in sacks? The DBs never seem to turn around to see the ball coming and as you say, almost always lose the one on one battles. The special teams weren't so bad, imo. Domagala's placekicking was replaced with a reliable leg. Lawrence returned well when healthy. btw: whatever happened to Frankie Williams? We seem to find capable returners if nothing else. I'm not sure if BLM is the answer? Dane Evans is talented enough...he just needs to eliminate the mistakes and play with confidence. Even if we sign BLM, I don't think we should let Dane go. We also seem to have no luck with our #1 draft picks, unless they're linemen. If only we had drafted Nathan Rourke. I wonder when his brother will be available?

The question isn't who would have thought that Mauldin would be that good; it's who SHOULD have known he would be, & the answer is: our coaching staff. Our D got very little pressure on the QB in the first part of the season. The Dbs consequently were always having to cover for far too long, & thus got burned repeatedly. I still think Leonard is the weak link there, he's routinely exploited for his lack of size. Agree that STs improved, but it took far too long for that to happen. That's also on the coaching staff. Frankie Williams basically retired due to the repeated concussions he suffered. I guess it's possible he might come back, depending on how he's doing. I also don't think BLM is the answer. Dane needs a cohesive O line & better receivers & he'll be fine.

I think the run game will take pressure off the pass rush. I also think we already have good receivers. It would be nice to have Bralon Addison back though. Hope he recovers and stays healthy. Our defence could use improving, particularly the pass rush. Leonard did have some picks but do think he suffers against taller receivers.

What we’ve missed for a long time is a guy who will always come down with the ball, consistently, whether double covered or not. The SJ Green, Burnham, Lawler type guys. Even when you know they’re getting the ball thrown to them, no matter the defence, can find a way to get open or outwork a db for the catch. Dunbar and White are athletic and talented guys. But they fall short in this area. I think Addison probably has the best hands in that receiving corps - if he stays healthy I think he’s the go to guy on those crucial second down conversions, over White. It’s the staying healthy part that’s worrisome.

The problem, as you pointed out, is him staying healthy. IIRC, Lawler is a FA. I wouldn't mind us taking a run at either him or Lewis.

Some people might not agree with this but I wouldn’t mind seeing Duke Williams here either- hopefully he’s learned some lessons after last year about selfish play and comes back healthy. Could be a steal compared to the price tag for the other two. I like Devaris Daniels as well but can’t see the Argos letting him go.

I think Sask was probably a really toxic environment, particularly last year. Williams might do well with a change of scene.

Addison is a great receiver. I'm not enamored with the way they were using him similar to Deebo Samuel (gives up 3" and 15lbs to him) as I believe it added to his wear and tear. Could have been a symptom of the horrible OL at the start of the year, however. I read on The Prowl a tweet saying that he's finally off crutches for good after TWO Achilles surgeries, and that was only a couple of days ago. I'm not a doctor, nor am I a physiotherapist, but I see no way possible for him to get back up to game-strength before Labour Day. I took my buddy (triathlete) over a year to get back to full capabilities after a tear and SINGLE surgery.

You’re probably pretty close on that timeline. Expect to see him doing light drills in camp and go on the 6 game to start the season at least. That would give him about a year which sounds right. In the meantime we might get to see a bit more from Anthony Johnson, Terry Godwin and whoever else they bring in.
