TSN crew said it: every game at THF, the wind has been a factor. It's utterly stupid that Steinauer continues to give up the wind in the 4th. At least he can't do it anymore this year, since there won't be another home game.

Even if BC wins tonight, Calgary isn't the kind of team to mail it in. I fully expect them to beat sask regardless.

I honestly don't think I have ever been so uninspired in a win.
My wife said it best - Ottawa is a BAD football team, had 7 (I think) starters injured, and Hamilton should have destroyed them.
I don't know if it's a case of playing up or down to the level of their opponent, but I cannot understand beating Calgary and Winnipeg but barely squeeking by the bottom-feeders.

I don't know if it's a case of playing up or down to the level of their opponent, but I cannot understand beating Calgary and Winnipeg but barely squeeking by the bottom-feeders. I didn’t have a lot of confidence going into this one. Figured it would take everything to squeak one out which is what they did. I think this is the game they had to get out of their system. Still a huge win however it came. Nice finish by Shiltz coming in cold. Couple big runs ( including the one by Evans where he got hurt) and clutch field goals by Small. Actually think they’ll play better next week, resting starters or not. |

Some coffee thoughts (I didnt know Drew Edwards did that btw, it's literally me getting my coffee and getting away from 2 toddlers). Also felt like this one wouldnt be easy, cause that's what average teams do. Play to the level of their competition. After the strip of Dane that was really nothing more than a fluke - I had a feeling it might be a rough night. The game felt very flat, stadium bored and at times impatient. It was one of the more deflating feelings i've felt in that stadium. STE ran for 115 yards or so on 7 carries. It's clear a revamped OLine has given us a solid running game. I felt we didn't use it enough. Way too much passing on 1sd down for my liking. I'm buying into coache 's theory that they're scared of wind - it's so clear when we have the wind it's time to light it up and throw, and when we don't it's time to shut it down and run. Instead of just executing the game plan and allowing players to adjust for the wind, they have 2 game plans with and without. I don't like it. Ottawa scored only 2 FGs in the 2nd half - after embarrassing our D at times in the 1st half. Both FGs were as a result of wind and field position. What to say about Seth Small - Other than i'm glad we have him. Tim White has emerged as a top receiver in the league - He's now 3rd in receiving, and has a realistic shot at leading the league. He may get 100 catches, and most importantly hes played in every game. A team often decimated with injuries can count on him to be in the line up every week. Dunbar has really slowed down lately - but still has a shot at 1000 yards next week. I have no issue going into next year with White and Dunbar starting. Twice - Hamilton did QB sneaks needing TWO yards, on second down and then 3rd down. I've been saying this for years, and now that the Cats have a decent OLine there's no reason on 2nd and 2 to stand back in the shotgun and try an inside handoff especially around the goal line - they give you a yard, take the yard...twice. I'm not adding much more because it was a very "blah" game - But let's hope Calgary wins today (i don't think they will) because I don't want it to come down to winning another road game. At the end of the day this is all bonus - this team was left for dead after Labour Day so i'm not going to complain about HOW they win games. They've won 4 of their last 5 and are in the drivers seat for a playoff spot. Felt impossible a couple months ago. Worse teams have won the Grey Cup. |

Good teams find a way to win when they are not playing their best, or, the Ticats are playing down to the level of inferior competition. Let's face it the RB's were playing for their season, so even though they were short starters they gave it everything they had. I think some don't give them enough credit. They, like the Ticats, are better than their record.
I really liked the play of #48 Cedric Wilcotts when he stripped Arbuckle of the football. I could imagine him saying "That's my football" to Arbuckle as he did it.
I know some here are not Tim White fans, but as Crash mentioned, he's played every game (and leads the league in receptions). He should be a CFL all-star this year.
Stephen Dunbar seems to run hot and cold, imho. He can either be unstoppable or look like absolute crap. You never know which one you have until the ball is thrown his way. If he could find some way to consistently play well I would be a big fan. I remember his first game versus the All Wets. After every reception he seemed to run right through the smaller DB's trying to tackle him. Has the hourglass run out on him? I think the team will make a decision this off-season and it might not be good for him.
I don't think they should bring Lemar Durant back next year. He seems like an overpaid 3rd option receiver. I would play Kiondre Smith in his place - he had that long bomb TD in the Winnipeg game. Not bad for a rookie out of Guelph.
Hopefully Addison comes back fully healed and ready to rock next year. He has the potential to be the best player in the league, a la (a younger) Speedy B.
I hope that Evan's injury is just a bad bruise but the way he was favouring it when hurt I am really concerned.
As I mentioned in a previous thread, this team is 4 or 5 players away from being the dominant team we've known recently. This off-season, Bob might open his purse-strings due to us hosting the Cup next year. I have high hopes.

I liked them, as it gave him the night to ruminate on things (just as I have today).
Seth Small may be TOO good and get snapped-up by an NFL team at the earliest opportunity.
I'm starting to not hate Timmeh. Yes, he's played every game and there's something to admire about that, but that's the ONLY consistent thing about him. I have lost count of how many balls have hit him in both hands and then either hitting the ground, or falling into a defender's mitts.
It makes me wonder if Dunbar is playing more hurt than most. Again, he has had FAR too many balls clank off both hands, and he doesn't seem to be the big punishing WR/SB he was in earlier games. That being said, him and Timmeh and Kiondre Smith are about the only ones I would keep for next season. This team needs full-time play-makers, ones you can realy upon to catch anything thrown to them, a la Andy Fantuz, Dave Stala, Darren Flutie, et al.
Agreed on the QB sneaks. It MIGHT have been a different story if Hills was playing, as he's the big-body RB. <sigh>If only FG-G could run the ball as a FB like Julian Radlein </sigh>. |

I do not recall hearing his name all game, and honestly I wasn't looking for him either. It's good to see Micah Johnson earning his pay this week. More often than not, it's been the other way. I think Ted Laurent is, unfortunately, done after this season. Too many miles on his body, too many years on his legs, too many knee injuries. If by some odd piece of luck we actually win the GC with him playing, it will remind me of 1972 and Mosca's last football game.
I am not holding out any hope for Addison's recovery until half-way through next season. If it is indeed an Achilles tear/rupture, then it takes a full year to recover. As much as I like the guy and admire his skills and play-making ability, he has spent FAR more time on the IL than playing football games. IF the team re-signs him (I am not aware of his contract status), then I would hope it's in the $80k-range with LOTS of performance bonuses. Remember - he will only be playing (at most) a half-season, IMHO.

Not often I get mad at the team. Frustration, disgust but rarely anger. But that was me after the first half.
Some of it being anger at myself for thinking the team would magically transform into more than what it is. But facts are stubborn things. No sense fighting it. They won, fun night out. Enjoy it whilst you still can.
Cheers: Small. Going to be heartbreaking watching him leave. STE, was never a big fan, but he delivered in the clutch.Should probably respect him more. Oline..maybe the most overlooked story this year. From an absolute Fire Gibson catastrophe to a unit that has lifted the entire offense. Micah Johnson has been a punching bag for me all year but he was legit good last night,
Jeers: Evans INTs. Same old same old pass defense. I think we got jobbed on the Dunbar strip ? Don't like the gray shirts, whole "Hammer" scheme. Adds nothing, Hope that's the end of it.

Funny how it's been lifted by one of the members of the Prowl too. For reference - Tim White's percentage of catches to targets is in line with the top 5 receivers in the league. All of them catch about 63-66% of balls thrown their way - Schoen is closer to 70%. Now, we obviously don't know how those targets relate to catchable balls, but I think sometimes we hate on our own a little more than we hate on others (the girls we can't have). Tim White doesnt have many catches like the one against Calgary last week where he jumps over everyone and it's all over social media, like Eugene Lewis. It's not flashy, he has speed but we don't get to see it too often like on a slant, but that's the make up of this offense. At the end of the day the numbers don't lie, his production stacks up against anyone in the league. (Stats attached) AND he stays healthy. Attachments:

As I say, I'm starting to not hate him.
Aside from the attitude, he reminds me of Craig Yeast. Absolutely amazing when on his game, completely useless when not.
I don't know if its the same thing with other teams, maybe because I am too invested with Hamilton, but I don't recall so many balls that hit a receiver in both hands being dropped/tipped anywhere else. It's not just Timmeh - Dunbar, Smith, and others have done so too; too many times for my liking.
This makes me wish we had an easily-searchable site for advanced stats and analytics for the League.

Ottawa chose end - took the wind in the 2nd quarter. Hamilton took the ball to start the game. Hamilton then took the ball in the 3rd quarter. I think Stein figured Ottawa would take the ball - leaving Hamilton the wind in the 2nd quarter. Then Hamilton would get ball and wind in the 3rd. Which has happened a bunch this year. |
