He was hit as he threw the ball. He also held onto it for longer than the 4 seconds on the game clock.
From 3DN:
"As per CJME’s Britton Gray, Patterson told the media in Regina that he needed to throw the ball sooner, saying, “That’s a veteran linebacker sending me a message — respect to him.” If he’s not upset about the hit, there’s no need for Rider Nation to fly off the handle over it, though I’m sure they will."
Bighill put a bit more oomph into the hit, and I -think- he may hae landed on Pattrson, but IMHO it was a football play. They could easily have used a backup QB to run around, make a pass back to a RM/WR behind the LOS to jog as far backwards as possible, etc. This, to me, is a case of an inexperienced QB putting himself into a dangerous situation.
