He's listed at 5'9" and 210lbs - a very compact, very muscular, very powerful frame makes it incredibly difficult to tackle when he lowers his centre of gravity. I wasn’t convinced that spending some bucks on him in the offseason was the right move, would have been just as happy if they had re-signed Wes Hills with a healthy raise. But have to admit I’ve been impressed at how Butler handles all phases of the game, running hard, receiving and picking up the blitz. Not to mention his durability. Along with Thurman he’s probably the best move made in free agency. We really haven't seen a RB like him since Troy Davis - except I haven't seen him barf on the field yet.

Gable in his rookie year might have been the closest but Butler has more power. Avon Cobourne also a good all around back but Butler is a machine.

Butler is, so far, the one indisputable great football decision made by this regime.

Butler is a great back. His jump cuts are a thing of beauty.

His "reports" read like long winded fan posts and about as useful.

His "reports" read like long winded fan posts and about as useful. Here's the thing... show me one person on any message board, twitter, Facebook etc. Who after the Edmonton and Montreal home losses said any variation of... "I have faith in this team and coaching staff. We'll get back to .500 by the end of the year and peak at the right time". Show me that person and I'll buy them a beer and congratulate them on a great take. But the people that are coming out of the woodwork to say "see?" Are phoneys.

He got this gig when Drew Edwards and Dunk approached bloggers/podcasters of each team to write for The Scratching Post/3DownNation. Probably the closest to anything anywone would call a decent writer is the bloke from Winnipeg, but the rest are rank amateures, and it shows.
Have you listened to his podcasts? I used to, but they got too repetitive and whiney for my taste.

"Anything can happen", "you gotta believe", "it's always darkest before the dawn" etc . They're cliche aphorisms. It isn't football knowledge. They aren't predictions based on knowledge. They're things to make yourself feel better or when you can't form an argument. It's fake and weak.

for sure. A glorified blogger. When Condell was fired he took on all fans with "you think this is gonna change anything" and "Washington needs to go too". all coverage of the CFL is good coverage. But I can't take him seriously.

But I can't take him seriously. On this point, it's genuinely surprising how much the defence has improved in the last 2 months against teams not named the Argos. We were all calling for Washington to be turfed or at least put on a tighter rein. I'm really interested in knowing what the catalyst for the improved play was. Possibly Steinauer, who appears to leave most of the game planning to his coordinators, took a greater role in the defence? If we had an active journalist not connected to the team, maybe we'd get answers to some of our burning questions.

The play of the defence as of late is surprising. They have always blitzed once in awhile in the past, but I notice they blitz more frequently than in the past. Maybe Stein is getting more involved in the defence, because he sure doesn't know much about offence.

If Calgary and Sask are in that same category then have they improved? The test is Friday night for the entire football team really. Go out and beat BC and look good doing it, and we have some serious improvement on our hands. Otherwise it's beating up on bottom feeders like true Ticat fashion.
