Various and sundry observations.
Looked like quite possibly the best team Walters and OShea have fielded so far and that's bad news for everybody. How do they find that talent and we, well....?
Salvaged some respect but fact remains defense was completely dominated, perhaps humiliated. Could be Bummers, could be us, probably a mix.If yourre looking for silver linings there ain't tonight.
You knew the "chemistry" and "timing" talk was coming but let's face it Mitchell stunk for the most part. Lots of misses and bad throws. Not just chemistry. Early days, of course.
Can't complain about STs defense. Good returns by Woods. Felt good for Reinbold.
So after game 1 Bummers are still the model franchise and we're still asking questions.

Some coffee thoughts this am...
- Bo didnt look good. I get the whole "new city, new team, new system" stuff but the INT was flat out terrible. The fumble on the sack is inexcusible, we were led to believe that Bo's veteran persona and his experience would be the end of these silly mistakes - the same ones we saw under the last 2 QBs.
- Special teams were a bright spot. If you think coaching doesn't make a difference you just arent paying attention. Big plays on ST all night kept us alive. Small has to kick the damn ball in bounds - and I don't believe he handled kickoffs last season.
- Minimal pressure on Collaros is going to lead to a young secondary getting exposed.
- Agree that this looked like a revamped Winnipeg team that might be better than the previous ones, that's scary.
- Im ok with a week 1 loss, but the penalties and mistakes are an indication of not being prepared. This is very concerning.
- I may be in the minority but i don't have a problem with the Adeleke call. He did make a gesture as if he was going to kneel. If you didn't know about the rule or penalty I suspect simply watching his motion you would agree he somewhat attempted to deceive the Bombers. This really isnt the spirit of the rule though, it was put in because Collaros of all people started faking slides, putting defences in an impossible spot, hit him and you get penalized, dont hit him and you look stupid as he runs by you.
- Im happy to see big plays on D and ST, this is something that was sorely missed last season. We win a bunch more games if we had those types of plays in 22. Our turnover ratio was impacted just as much by takeaways than it was giveaways
- Encouraged by the deep shots. Guys running wide open down the field is not a bad thing.
- The penalties are very discouraging. Not much more to say. If you have a culture of doing things the right way those things don't happen. (And they didnt come from Simoni, Edwards, Duke, etc.)
- Thought Stein's challenge was a good one to win, but the timing sucked and I didn't like the risk. It cost us later.
Overall I didn't expect to win this game. I called WPG by 9 and a game that the score flattered us but we were never really in. I was in the ballpark. I'm not worried or panicked at this point, but now that we have a real game under our belts it's important that they learn from this and move forward.
Early returns though indicate that we'll be trying to win a mediocre East and try our luck in a 1 game crapshoot.

Well I got to the pissed off part of my night around 9:00 p.m. instead of 11:30 p.m.. Only one game, but I'm seeing the same BLM that I did the last couple of seasons. 70% of his throws were either over-thrown or under-thrown. As for the defence, I hope they have the names and numbers of some defensive co-ordinators on the rolodex because Washington's defensive schemes just ain't cutting it. New players - same old shit. When they got the score to a respectable deficit late in the fourth quarter (despite three flukey touchdowns) they had trouble moving the ball on offence and stopping the Bummers when they had the ball. Never expected a win last night and I'll be more interested to see how they play in Toronto next week.

I'm willing to look on the positive side, and you might be thinking its the big plays on defense, the actually seemingly game planned special teams, Bo's near misses that look more like rust rather than suck, or maybe even semblance of a running game....
it's not...
The team looked better in the second half than the first. Coach O making adjustments that work? that's my big take away and what i'm choosing to focus on for the next five days.

I'm not sure it was adjustments, or just him challenging/chastizing them to do better. STs and D (to an extent) played much better in the second half - the O, not so much.

Compared to recent years of going into the half ahead or close and subsequently finding out everything that worked in the first half no longer works? I'll take it.

And yet, the Offence had one TD drive all game. The strip-sack and TD were courtesy of Laurent and Edwards, with the ST fumble return taken to the 2 for a punch-in one play later.

Less worried about the score or the result because I wasnt expecting a win, the penalties concern me as does the number of passes (likely a result of trailing) but Bo wont be able to keep up this pace. He missed too many wide open receivers where a softer throw would have been caught but likely not in stride. He has to know when he doesnt quite have it and throw a better ball.
Biggest concern is that this is the Bo we've seen since 2019 so massive red flag.
Sunday will be the telltale sign for me, just a bad start or is it something more.

We seem to have big enough receivers who should be able to get the "50/50" balls, or deliberate underthrows instead of hitting them in stride. Bo put the blame on his footwork. Who knows if the receivers ran the correct route at the correct speed.

So this is a point i have wanted to bring up for a long time and after the many comments about the Cats losing all but two season openers in 23 yrs let me point something out. Fact: in the past 12 yrs the Cats have opened on the road 9 times and 7 times against the west. In the past 22 yrs the Cats have opened their season 15 times (68%) on the road and 15 tumes (68%) against the west. The Argos, & Als on the other hand have opened less than 1/2 of their openers on the road. The Argos as GC champs should have opened this year against WBB who they defeated in the GC. Instrad, they get a Bye week one and the Cats have to face the WBB. I am really angry as a Ticat fan that year after year we get shafted by the schedule maker and the Argos are favoured. Is it because the Argos cant fill the seats in the stands that they get these unfair advantages of an easier early schedule? Most of their first 3 or 4 games in recent yrs have been against the Als, Elks, and ORB who have struggled. Ticat management needs to start pushing back against poor scheduling year after year.

I feel like the starting on the road is at the request of the Ticats. It's the only explanation for this.

Has the team under Steinauer ever played a complete 60 minute game? Not sure it even happened in the 2019 fluke year.

Nah. The 'peg game, we let them almost get back in it in the second half. Watford's games did not showcase the offence operating at a high level IMO, although it was a case of the O line imposing their will on the opposing D, which is rare as well.
There may have been a game in 2019 when it happened, but I can't remember.
On a happier note, I got a townhouse in Stoney Creek less than 3 km from where I grew up, moving back in 6 weeks.
