Some observations coming from the game. Note I have not seen the video so if anything I say is proven incorrect based on watching on TV, i'll gladly take the hit for that.
1. This team is not well coached. 2 consecutive weeks we seem to make zero adjustments at the half - our head coach chose to come out for his hall of fame moment in the sun (and that's his choice) but he wasnt in the locker room with the team or his assistants. I'm not sure I would have done the same.
2. Domagala seems to be turning into a reliable kicker. 3/3 on FG with a missed PAT. Still better than BerTOILET. I'm nervous as hell with him in there but he's developing into a professional kicker in front of our eyes.
3. I don't get what we were doing with the coin toss. Assuming Calgary won the toss and deferred. Hamilton took the ball. In the second half Calgary chose the ball (down 24-3) and Hamilton immediately took the wind in the 3rd Quarter. I'm assuming Stein wanted to put them away and win the 3rd quarter. That backfired with 2 drives in their territory that ended with an INT and a turnover on downs. I would have preferred the wind in the 4th.
4. I have not seen the replay but I have to imagine Evans' forward progress was stopped. To me on the screen it looked like he was on his 3rd effort when it was stripped. He absolutely has to protect the ball there, but if we're protecting QBs why isnt that play blown dead after his initial surge?
5. Down 14 - Calgary scores to make it 8. New style analytics say they should go for 2 to make it 6 (or 8). The reason for this is you have 2 shots to get 1 x 2 point conversion. The chances of getting 1 of them is better than your chances of winning the game with 3 scores. If you get the first one, you are down 6 and can win the game (or take the lead) with a single point. If you don't get it, you have to go for it the second time. I'd like to see CFL coaches embrace analytics a little more.
6. Hamilton gets the ball after a Calgary punt with 1:46 - gets 7 on first down and for some inexplicable reason we throw the ball on second down. We kicked a FG with 1:19 left and Calgary didn't use a time out. That's completely unacceptable from Condell and Stein. You have to run that ball to either get the first down, make it 3rd and short, and at a bare minimum run the clock under 1 minute. It's mind boggling the mistakes this coaching staff continues to make in these situations.
7. Papi White is not ready to be a full time receiver. He's just not there yet. There's definitely flashes that Dunbar and Kneel White have it in them but at the end of the day I would have rather had Acklin over Papi White. We're going to regret that one.
8. What's with the epidemic of letting other teams score at will late in the game? This team keeps doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. You know they call that the definition of insanity.
9. Dane was 36/51 for 425. I think that's too many passes. If June Jones did one thing right (and it might have only been 1) he had a resemblance of a running game. When the game was on the line and we needed a run, we didn't trust it enough to call it. That says alot. I'm not sure if we don't run because we have a brual Oline, or if we have a brutal Oline because they dont run enough (Olinemen like to get out and hit someone).
10. I have to say, i'm losing interest sitting in the stands. You can only take so much pounding. You could see this one coming a mile away. After the turnover on downs up 24-3 I made a nice bet on Calgary cause I just knew it was coming. Was nice to win some cash. When that tipped ball was picked a couple of my friends were yelling and swearing and I guess that's good. I just started laughing. Toronto gets missed fields from 20 yards, we get this. It's called apathy, and it sucks. This organization is a laughing stock lets be honest. It's gonna take more than winning 1 Grey Cup for me to snap out of this.
