Defense was noticeably motivated. Did Calgary enter the red zone? I think the closest they got was their 2nd FG, somewhere around the 30, which means it would have been snapped around our 23. It's concerning that the O was so anemic. I would have liked to see them move the pocket a little more, especially after Shiltz came in. Calgary did not look to me like a team who was desperate, & we didn't either, which I think is why this game was largely so boring. Over at the prowl, the glass is definitely half-full, as the goldfish seem willing to overlook the team's deficiencies now that a playoff berth is secured. It's crazy how you can almost measure their lack of attention in favour of what little hope there might be available to latch onto. I'm more concerned that late season victories might mask the team's warts sufficiently to give Steinauer more rope when he could already open up a f*cking rope shop as it is.

Whether the Stamps had already pulled the chute is beside the point the defense played well and took away what deep threat Stamps still had. Aside from the two deep balls ( which Condell used to get ripped for when they failed) the offense was mostly plodding but didn't need to be anything to else. Butler was used effectively. So now the narrative is HAM good enough to take away a home playoff game away from MTL is an open question. A step up from when it looked like we wouldn't get anything.

17 weeks in the cats finally try a fake... it worked but was batted down FG-G didn't execute. Whoever allowed that guy to block the pass didn't execute. If they executed a first down they wouldn't have to attempt it.
Have we been able to execute one successful gadget play all year? Kind of like last week’s flea flicker.

Deficiencies in the team are known by even the most faithful cheerleading types. For me personally, it can get tiresome to trot these out time and again, so once in a while I think it’s ok to actually give the team some props where it’s deserved. Play of the defence last night and the decision to pull the plug on Powell have to be recognized. Can’t imagine this team as constructed could accomplish much more than an ESF win but this is farther ahead than what we were all expecting after Labour Day. Still think they need to redo football ops staff top to bottom because the Argos, unlike the aging Bombers, look like they’ll be a force for a few years and mediocrity won’t cut it if Hamilton is serious about fielding a contending team.

While I understand, & sympathize to a point, it's become eminently clear that team ownership counts on this kind of fatigue from the fanbase & leverages it in order to maintain support when the on-field product falters. And because it's Hamilton, this happens a lot. Having lived out of town for many years, I've had a ton of conversations with people who say, in regard to Ticat fans particularly, they're too accepting of mediocrity. Over the years, I've come to agree with this.

Over the years, I've come to agree with this. Sure, the ownership is trying to protect their investment which is why they’ve relied on the games becoming more of a social event than a competitive effort where fans live and die with the result. But many of us lived through the 80s and 90s teams and saw the dwindling attendance and apathy set in on the franchise - but with very little improvement in the on field product for the most part in response to this. Perhaps a mass exodus of paying fans could spark some change but I’m honestly not convinced the people at the top really know how to put together a successful team and hire the right people to do so, fan pressure or not. In a league that has some of the best guarantees of competitive balance with both player and football operations caps, you’d think they could at least fall into a championship at some point in spite of themselves.

Agree. I don't think Steinauer has it in him, and Young & Mitchell appear to be unable to keep their noses out of football ops. I've been thinking recently about how the fanbase was in an uproar in the mid to late 70s over the mediocre record; now, it's de rigeur. I think our best chance of falling into a championship was 2021. But the kneel happened....

I feel like the will to win is there when you consider they’ve had two CPL championships and went out and spent like drunken sailors in this year’s CFL free agency (and really 2020 as well before it was cancelled). What’s lacking is a top notch talent finder/scouting dept. to replace departed free agents, injured and older players and build depth for down the road. They also need to rebuild the Canadian draft cupboard, feels like we’ve traded away a lot of picks in the last two years.

Coincidence equals not causation, but this is pretty telling.
