I think i'm past calling out individual players at this point. This is organizational and systematic failure to put a competitive football team together. We have managed to regress from a Grey Cup 15-3 team to this in 2 seasons, with many of those players still in their prime, in the league on other teams. This Defense is GOOD but not great, and this offense is simply not well built.
Back to the offseason...
"Boy they really need to figure out what to do with the Oline that has been manhandled in 2 consecutive Grey Cups" Ticats draft 1 OL in the 2022 Draft - in the seventh round. EVERY SINGLE TEAM not named Winnipeg drafted at least 1 OL before we did in the 7th round, most took 2.
"The Ticats need to get Dane some weapons if we aren't going to re-sign Banks or Acklin - or he'll be a sitting duck" Of all of the WR's available and there were a ton. We signed Lemar Durant - with an injury history, who has not played a down. BC has a bunch of NBA players out there playing WR.
"How are they going to replace Ja'Gared Davis?" Easy. They signed a guy that retired, and then thought a washed Micah Johnson in a position of strength would somehow help. It hasn't.
You could see this coming a mile away, and yes while I was called a ton of names for it I stand by my position that not only is Stein not fit to be a President of Football operations (the results of his first offseason are showing) but this organization has made an effort to cut costs. Canada day marquee standalone game, no flyby? no fireworks? Just hours of marketing the latest money grab jersey? At some point it's a fair question to suggest this organization isn't spending what it could be on players. I think 4 games in that time is now. It's simple - we are either not spending, or we're so bad at where we are spending that there should be consequences for it.
As with all bad teams there's about 10-15 really good football players on this team and obviously you have to sift through what you have, but guys like Ungerer, Turnowski and Papi White aren't the answer, they aren't starting caliber players and frankly they're an insult to the franchise QB that we actually did put resources in to. (I realize i said I wasn't going to call out players but really I'm calling out that entire unit).
The argument about Condell, Gibson, etc are all futile because if you want them gone, then you should be mad at Stein for not pulling the trigger. This type of regression and failure doesn't fall completely on one man (who might be in over his head) but on all of them... the difference is Stein is responsible for the roster that gets put on the field, and then then what that team does. Just like Austin, just like Lancaster.
And I don't want to hear a peep about Evans. We know what he can do. The issue with this team is the overwhelming number of players that don't belong.

Wonder what HSG is thinking. Bad football means bad business, right ?

Over on the team cheer board, many posters are waking up to what we've been saying for a couple of years now. Still, there's a bunch of idiots blaming Evans "because he doesn't have Masoli to fall back on anymore". What an idiotic concept. He certainly didn't have him when Masoli went down for the season in 2019, and the whole league saw what he can do.
Bottom line: Steinauer is responsible for this mess, always has been. At least June Jones could blame his stupid decisions on being old af. Why, after deciding to dump Masoli and his salary for this season, didn't the team go out & sign all star caliber tackles? It worked for Winnipeg ffs.

And I don't want to hear a peep about Evans. We know what he can do. Let's just hope that Evans doesn't become another Jonathon Jennings because I've seen that story before. Really, really hope that doesn't happen.

We were already paying most of those guys already. Even if we gave them all raises, it wouldn't come to that. No idea where it went, but we're the worst team in the league right now, no question about that.

Really, really hope that doesn't happen. What's disappointing to me is the fans that insist on blaming Evans because it will somehow vindicate their stance on the Masoli/Evans debate. Comments like "Look at the points off turnovers because of Evans' INTs" He literally has 5 INTs this year that hit receivers in the hands. If you have that much of an ulterior motive when posting you just look like a jackass. The guy can play, he wants to be in Hamilton and somehow this mess is him? We really have the dumbest fanbase in Canada.

We really have the dumbest fanbase in Canada. There’s legit reasons why he’s playing so poorly but at some point it won’t matter. He’s lost confidence in himself and the team around him. The forced throws into coverage and turnovers will get worse as he’s trying to put it all on his shoulders. No way he should be taking off and running 7-8 times a game, he’ll get destroyed and just isn’t built to be that guy. They are going to have to go back to basics, commit to the run game with the backs. Keep the running back in to block more often instead of emptying the backfield and use Burt more at tight end to try to give him time to throw more than 3 yards downfield. We’ve seen this story play out with Collaros and Calvillo and I’m worried it doesn’t end well. To be honest I almost think the best thing for him might be to sit him for a couple of games before he completely loses confidence or gets injured. Give the fan base the backup quarterback they desperately crave and maybe they’ll realize how many issues this team really has.

I don't think you can sit Dane to protect him when you're 1 game out of a 1st place, as pathetic as that is. If it continues to go south I wouldn't be against sitting him to literally protect him, but that has to come with transparency from Stein. "We've realized we didn't do a good enough job protecting him so now i'm going to have to do it myself" Unfortunately with O that wont happen. I saw a few plays last night where extra blockers were brought in and Dane had time... but then you're asking this set of receivers to play 3 against 5 to get open. They don't have the talent. Dane took what time he could and either threw it away or checked it down if that option was there. I sit up high in THF and I can tell you, downfield is ugly. There was a play where none of the routes looked sharp, it looked like receivers were going through the motions and I looked at my buddy and said "Did you see that?" and he says "That play was like a bunch of football players just running around." - it's hard to describe over text but it looked like routes with no purpose and defintion. It was ugly. Look, im not going absolve Dane from any of his mistakes. He's made them too. But the difference between 2019, 2021 and now is clearly the talent on the Offensive side of the ball. It's just not there.

It's just not there. Good points about the receivers. Will have to pay more attention to what’s going on downfield as I saw a couple plays where no one seemed to be open as well. The thing that baffles me is the offensive personnel isn’t all that different from mid-season last year. Coaches are the same. I can’t see Ciraco, Acklin or Banks making that much of a difference with this group. The younger guys have a year experience now and Addison is back but doesn’t seem himself. Not sure if guys are playing tight, too cautious or defences are just figuring out Condell’s little misdirection running plays and short passes but they have to figure something out in a hurry. Most troubling is I don’t see much on the horizon they can pin any hope on - nobody on the coaching side ready to step in if they make a move and tie a can to Condell or Washington. Durant or Don Jackson won’t make the offence go as it currently stands. And Saxelid and Fontana are real question marks at this point. Agree with others that this is ultimately on Steinauer but he won’t fire himself. I think we’re looking at some personnel substitutions over the next couple of weeks, maybe even some vets like Micah Johnson or even Simoni getting sat. Papi has to come off - let’s see what Anthony Johnson or Butler brings to the table. We play In BC on a short week after the Ottawa game and I think that’s when the shite really hits the fan.

This game HURT to watch, and not in the way you would think.
I saw Dane lose all confidence in the guys in front of him (O-line and receivers) and try to take the ento=ire team on his back and make something out of nothing. I think he's emotionally beat, and he looked shellshocked.
I saw this with Calvillo in his tenure here. He's made his mistakes with ball protection (all his fumbles, and a couple INTs) but the ones that bounce of BOTH HANDS of a receiver are incredulous. ST-E had this happen TWICE this season - looking upfield before making the catch. GREAT idea for a SB, eh?
Our DBs, on paper, should all be Division all-stars. They have the skills and experience to shut down almost ANY CFL offence, but the schemes Mark Washington hampers them with have me shaking my head. I cannot undestand why he didn't pressure Tre Ford on every snap. FAR too many 7-15-yard completions - especially on second down.
Dylan Wynn is, IMHO, our only starting-calibre D-line player. Micah Johnson and Laurent's days (never mind BEST days) are beyond them. Teddy has been dealing with a bum knee for three years, and Johnson is simply too old right now. Of course, our DEs don't strike any fear whatsoever in opposing QBs. Looks like ALL the cap space wint into the Secondary.

I don't understand what the Dline was going for tonight... seemed like the DEs were doing their best to penetrate rather than contain. Force Ford to throw rather than give him a free pass to an outside edge, and rely on that expensive middle to get some cookies.
Am I talking out of my ass here? likely...
just seemed like not a great game plan
