Just traded for an American RT who didn't play last year (and, therefore, the year before) due to injury. I hope we didn't give up very much.
With the majority of the immediate problems being the O-line - and, by extension, thr ratio - I suggest playing Burt as a full-time TE. He and Ungerer/Ternowski on the field at the same time couldn't be any worse than passing the ball to Papi White.

I just heard on twitter that we gave up a 7th round pick. Doesn't sound like we're getting something great if that's the cost. Agree with your proposal re Burt.

The Burt thing is similar to ha=ow Condell employed Kalinic with Watford under Centre. A 7th-rounder is of minimal consequence.

The Burt draft pick is starting to look more and more like a mistake when you look at the context of how this team has drafted.

Lots of possibilities if they keep STE in as well. Add in two Canadians at receiver and they might be able to play three Americans on Oline if it comes down to that because of the injury situation.
Or Jackson comes back and they keep a two receiver rotation with Ungerer/Ternowski/Burt.
Papi White is the backup returner for the moment but Ungerer could sub in if needed during a game if White comes out. STE and Irons also possibilities at returner in a pinch.
I wouldn’t mind seeing what Johnson or Butler could do at slotback in a straight up switch for PW.

I'm with Crash with regards to Papi being an offensive liability. Lots of speed and quickness, but can't seem to be able to run a route nor catch a pass effectively (sound familiar?). At some point, being a one-dimensional player will catch up to him in this league. I would rather see a National in his WR/SB position. Whatever happened to all the big, tall Canadian slot backs (Fantuz, Getzlaf, Moreale, etc) that USports used to produce? One of those guys would look great in our lineup these days. Kind of what I hoped guys like Kalinic and Burt could evolve into, but it seems as if this team is enamoured with tiny, fast, receivers.

The new OT can not be worse then what they have and a 7th rounder is worth the gamble. I do agree that it is time to get Burt in the line up and use him more as a blocking TE that can occasionally catch some passes.
We will see how the new OT works out but at least they are not sitting on their behinds thinking all is great.

Sask drafted a lot of big Canadian receivers with some speed in the last few years. We really went with a lot of small guys in the JJ era and I think that carried over into the draft. They seem to be going for a bit of balance now with guys like Dunbar, Johnson, Butler as well as Burt. Ternowski and Kiondre Smith aren’t huge but I believe they at least crack 6 feet.

They flat out refused to go out and get an import Oliner last year so either some lessons are starting to dawn on them or its considerably worse than we imagine.

We can afford the cap hit with three-plus Nationals on the 6-game.

Yes - last year they could have pried Derek Dennis away from the Elks for a draft pick likely as he was having some type of contract dispute. But that would have hit them in the wallet hard. Im guessing Van Zeyl getting dinged is more serious than we thought and they want to bring in a vet there - Kelly restructured in 2022 and isn’t making huge bucks. Hasn’t played much since 2019 but he has been a decent tackle in the league and still about 6 years younger than CVZ. Chris Jones moving out a bit of salary and making room for one of his guys. Good move for both teams

We could have gone after Ucambre Williams in free agency, but no, let's employ a rotation of imports we've never heard of & keep a 38 year old right tackle whose best days are clearly behind him.

With the trade for Kelly we now have 3 of the top 20 highest paid linemen. Williams, Ciraco don't even make the list and are upgrades over what we have. Maybe this team is spending to the cap, they're just really stupid with how they're doing it. 3downnation.com/2022/03/18/the-cfls-offensive-line-salaries-for-the-2022-season/

I called out Austin when his message/style seemed to go stale & I'm calling out O for the same thing. When you lose a championship at home that was in your grasp....well, let's just say that maybe that Elks recent trolling attempt wasn't far off the mark.
